GENERAL EDUCATION

I'm tempted to wonder whether we actually have it!

But that's a bit glib.

I will say that things started to go very wrong when Universities became Unis. Though the rot may have set in long before that.

I think I'm on thin ice here; completely out of step. But it is the way I see it. Too many people want to be Chiefs, which leaves room for very few Indians. And that, realistically, is the wrong way around. I know of several highly qualified people (* see the snippet in Music Education) who can't even come close to a job that requires that level of qualification, and this state of affairs can only get worse.

My big problem is that I only have opinions on this, I do not have a clue about solutions. So, what I should really do is shut up about it!

But I'm not going to.

SPELLING!

I guess it could be said that as long as people know what you are talking about, it doesn't matter how you spell it! True, or not, I am very uneasy about seeing mis-spelt stuff all over the place...even in colleges, where they are supposed to teach people how do do it correctly!

Mind you, I have only been closely associated with the one college - I'll not name it - so I can't really be so universal in my condemnation. But I have visited many colleges, and all have had mis-spelt signs on their walls, generally hand-written by (presumably) lecturers or admin staff. So I don't think I'm that far off-beam.

And as for apostrophe usage...well, this subject would require reams!

I am no paragon of virtue, but I do sometimes wonder at the point of it all. Where are we actually headed? And why?
